Port Newry is on the mainland north of Mackay and is a popular spot for cruisers heading to the Whitsundays. Often prawn trawlers seek shelter here and supply yachties with prawns which we were lucky to get (and they could not have been any fresher). Port Newry consists of two islands that both have great walks and surprisingly good phone coverage. The walks also provide spectacular views back towards Cape Hillsbrough on the mainland. Inner Newry Island was a holiday resort back in the 1960's and recently, National Parks have established an informative history trail amongst the resort ruins. We were sad when it was time to leave, and on a day as equally as calm as the one when we arrived, as we slowly motored past the unusual Concertina Rock as we farewelled the Newry's for now.
